Responding to the needs of women in the criminal justice system - evaluation of the training delivered to criminal justice professionals

This report provides an overview of the training delivered to Criminal Justice professionals and members of the judiciary on the specific needs of women in the Criminal Justice system, and makes recommendations for the further development of training modules and how they might be delivered.

The training was commissioned by the Prison Reform Trust and delivered by the national mental health charity, Together for Mental Wellbeing. It has long been acknowledged that most women caught up in the justice system have high levels of multiple and often complex needs, which they may find hard to disclose.

A better understanding of women’s needs, and how to respond positively towards them, is an important starting point in ensuring their needs are properly identified and met. Feedback from those who participated in the training was positive, and many spoke about how they intended to apply their learning in the work place.

This report should prove useful for services wanting to enhance their awareness and of, and services for, women in the criminal justice system.
