Gerry, aged 15, has been in care for much of his life. He kept in contact with his mum but after she died, his life went further downhill. The courts gave him a 10 month Detention and Training Order after a series of minor offences and several breaches of his supervision order.

 

Jamie's story

Jamie, 15, was involved in a number of robberies with older friends.  He breached two supervision orders and eventually the court sent him to prison. His hard-man reputation helped him to cope in prison but he missed out on GCSEs.

 

Jo's story

Jo, aged 15, was missing her family and college drama course after her first week on remand in a secure unit, charged with arson. With a record of minor offences, including criminal damage, she was worried about getting a long sentence.

 

John's story

John, aged 15, was arrested after a burglary with a group of friends where he was the lookout. He was tagged on a supervision order but after breaking the conditions of the order, he ended up in a secure unit on a six-month Detention and Training Order.

 

Mark's story

Mark, 18, had a history of car crime and alcohol abuse but when a car theft turned violent he received a two year custodial sentence. Following his release from prison, he now volunteers to help young offenders.

 

Martha's story

Martha, 15, never expected to be locked up in a secure unit despite several breaches of an ASBO she was given for drinking and bad behaviour. Finally the court lost patience with her and gave her a 12 month Detention and Training Order, reduced to 8 months on appeal.

 

Patrick's story

At 15, Patrick has known violence most of his life. Even when his father died, he was slapped for crying. He stabbed someone at a party but whilst in prison, he became interested in boxing which he hopes will give him a second chance.

 

Pete's story

At the age of 16, Pete found prison difficult to cope with after being convicted of burglary. With a history of violence, he got into trouble in prison for fighting. Now 17, he was back on the streets and still involved in gang violence.

 

Robbie's story

Robbie, 14, was first detained for street robbery when he was barely out of primary school. Since then he has been moved between secure units around the country because of his behaviour and escape attempts.

 

Sally's story

Sally, 15, was given a 6 month intensive supervision order after being a passenger in a stolen car but breached the order after missing meetings. She was given a 4 month DTO.

 

Sam's story

Sam first got into trouble with the police when he was 8 years old. At the age of 12, he was given a Detention and Training Order after a series of drug and alcohol related crimes, including burglary.

 

Susie's story

Aged 16, Susie has a history of self-harm following a sexual assault. When interviewed, she had been on remand for three months, accused of actual bodily harm. Bullied by other inmates, she was frightened about how she would cope in an adult prison.

 

Tracey's story

Tracey was 13 when she was remanded in a secure unit after street robberies with a group of friends. Classed as a dangerous offender, it was the first time she had been away from her family and she missed her mum.
