Commenting to-day on the Queen’s Speech and new law and order measures, Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust said: ‘When he took office, Tony Blair promised social inclusion but ended up seeking solutions, not in health, education and communities, but in prison and punishment. He promised public safety but, as prison numbers rocketed from 60,000 in May 1997 to almost 80,000 today, only managed to deliver record reconviction rates and rising fear of crime. It is a huge disappointment that the outgoing Prime Minister has failed to take his last chance in the Queen’s speech to join up government’s social and criminal justice policy’.
