Juvenile Re-offending Significantly Reduced Commenting on figures produced by the Youth Justice Board, Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust said:
“The Prison Reform Trust welcomes these findings. Reducing re-offending among this high-risk group by as much as 47 per cent is a remarkable achievement.
Given adequate support, early intervention can work to cut re-offending dramatically. The success of the reprimands demonstrates that crime prevention is most effective when structure and support are introduced early on.
These figures show that you do not have to resort to prison to stop youth offending in its tracks.”
The Prison Reform Trust calls on Government to build on this success by ensuring that Youth Offending Teams are more adequately resourced, and by looking at how non-custodial interventions can be expanded to work with offenders aged 18 and over.
