Month 2002 - Tagging children remanded on bail

The Prison Reform Trust comments on tagging children remanded on bail.

Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust commented today:

“Young offenders do need to be stopped in their tracks and then they need skilled help to change their behaviour and sort out the family, school and drug problems which almost always underlie their offending.

Electronic monitoring could help to contain young people involved in serious, persistent offending.  For some, tagging will help to avoid the damage which would otherwise be  caused by locking them up.  It will only work if it is combined with intensive, consistent supervision by adults who know how to care for, and control, children in trouble”.
