This is the website of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies. CCJS ‘aims to inform and educate about all aspects of crime and the criminal justice system’. On the site are an outline of current projects and a very useful list of links to other related websites.

This part of the Home Office website contains statistics on prisons, and an outline of the work of HM Inspectorate of Prisons including access to Inspection Reports and details of the Independent Monitoring Boards.

 

 

This is the site of research development statistics, which are put together by the Home Office. There is a large amount of information. For example, there are details on the main characteristics of the prison population, the length of sentences and the number of people released on temporary licence, HNC and parole. There are also projections of long term trends.

 

 

The Howard League for Penal Reform ‘works for humane and rational reform of the penal system’. The website sets out the organisations key campaigning issues, including the removal of all children from prison. There is also a study centre that contains a variety of information on the history of the prison service and the Howard League, and has details of their publications.

 

 

This is the Prison Service website and it provides details of how the Prison Service functions. It is possible to view a virtual tour, download the latest issue of Prison Service News, and find out how a prison is regulated. Prison life is examined, with topics ranging from self harm to what happens on arrival. There is also a resource centre and figures on the prison population.
